Nasal Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)

Nasal reshaping or rhinoplasty is aimed at improving both the appearance of the nose and the function with regards to breathing. Nasal reshaping or rhinoplasty is aimed at improving both the appearance of the nose and the function with regards to breathing.

The patient and doctor, together, set the goals for the procedure. To facilitate this an examination, discussion and review of imaging are useful. Successful reshaping of a nose involves restoring facial balance. At times, chin augmentation may be necessary.

Nasal surgery may be done with all incisions inside the nose or with a small incision crossing the narrow part of the columella. The surgeon typically sculpts the bone and cartilage framework of the nose to achieve the desired result. Excess bone, cartilage or skin may be removed or repositioned.

In some cases, cartilage taken from the nasal septum (the wall of tissue dividing the two nasal air passages) or the ear and is used to add structure or support where needed. Other materials are sometimes used as well. Breathing difficulty may be improved by the surgery on the septum ("septoplasty") or by other techniques. After the surgery, a splint is often placed to protect the nose.

Most patients resume household activities within one or two days. Pain and discomfort following the surgery are typically controlled with oral pain medication. Most stitches/splints are removed within one week after surgery. Within one to two weeks most patients can return to work.

Most bruising and/or swelling resolves within two weeks; more subtle swelling may persist longer, depending on the exact nature of the surgery and the patient.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs):

Who is a candidate for nasal reconstruction?
Those with nasal breathing problems (especially during exercise or sleeping-ie. snoring) or those with concerns of a 'crooked' nose, nasal 'hump' or a fat 'boxy' nasal tip. Women should be 15 or older and men should be 16 or older, or when their facial (and septal growth) is nearly complete.

How can I be sure that I get the result that I want?
Choose a board certified Plastic Surgeon who specializes in nasal reshaping. Communication with your surgeon, including all your concerns about the appearance of your nose, is important. Several detailed consultations may be required to make sure that the two of you are on the same page with the procedure. A successful procedure avoids the time, expense and difficulties of repeat surgeries.

Is a chin implant recommended at the same time as a rhinoplasty?
During an evaluation for nasal reshaping facial proportions and facial profile are considered. If microgenia (small chin) exists, then a chin implant may be considered. If the lower face is proportionally too long or too short then repositioning of the chin bone may be beneficial.

How long is the recovery?
2 weeks. During the first week, rest at home is recommended. During the second week, you may get back into your daily routine. Return to work or school and begin exercising in 2 weeks. Although your nose will immediately look good when the dressings are removed, it will continue to improve over a 12 month period.
