Prosper Benhaim, MD

Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, UCLA School of Medicine.

Prosper Benhaim, MDAbout Prosper Benhaim
Prosper Benhaim, MD, after completing his hand fellowship in 1998, received a joint appointment as Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery. He has the responsibility of overseeing the Plastic Surgery residents' operating experience.

Dr. Benhaim's primary areas of clinical interest are in hand surgery and microsurgery. Approximately 90% of his clinical practice involves hand surgery, with the other 10% involving general plastic surgery and reconstructive microsurgery.

Dr. Benhaim is also very active in research. Dr. Benhaim, along with Marc Hedrick, MD, oversees the Regenerative Bioengineering and Repair Laboratory, which focuses on multiple aspects of tissue engineering, adult wound healing, and fetal wound healing.

Dr. Benhaim's specific area of investigation within this lab is to develop tissue-engineered constructs that are applicable to the hand (e.g. tendon replacements, cartilage constructs for use as implants or for joint space resurfacing, tendon sheath constructs that minimize postoperative tendon adhesions, nailbed sterile matrix constructs to prevent nailbed deformities, etc.).
